Hello and welcome to the library! My name is Melanie Borror and I am the Library Media Specialist. This is my fifth year at AMS, and I’m so excited to be here with you! Previously, I was a middle school ELA teacher and then an elementary librarian. I love reading nonfiction and fantasy books, but my favorite is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I have such fond memories of reading it with my mom, when I was little. I’m looking forward to learning your favorite books and genres, and maybe helping you discover some new ones as well! When you visit the AMS Library Media Center, you will find the almost 10,000 book collection to browse.
Feel free to check out the catalog here!
The library also offers e-books and audiobooks through the Sora app. Through a partnership with Manhattan Public Library, 15,000+ titles are available to borrow. The app may be downloaded on a personal device (the sign-in will be the student’s district username and password) if you would like to preview the options there. On a computer, visit https://soraapp.com/library/manhattanksStudents will have the option to add this to their school iPad as well. The library is open from 8:15- 4:15 daily. Students will visit once a week in their ELA classes, but may drop in before or after school as well. Students may check out two books at a time, unless additional books are needed for a class project. The checkout period is two weeks. Students may place holds on books that are currently unavailable and renew materials, as long as someone else doesn’t have a hold on it. We have quiet spaces to work, as well as spaces to collaborate with friends. We are also your iPad and technology assistance central. You will find contests and fun challenges all the time, so be sure to book some time here. Happy reading! |
Hi AMS Families! My name is Keely Say and I am excited to help keep students healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Just a few reminders as we start out this school year. 1. If your child is running a fever (100.4 or above) they may NOT return to school until they are fever free 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications. 2. If your child is ill, please contact the office with the symptoms of illness. The office will let your child’s teacher know they will be absent. Please feel free to call me with any health related questions or concerns. You can email me or call me directly at the school. Sincerely, Keely Say keelysay@usd383.org 785-587-2890, ext. 7035 MEDICATION POLICY Medication must be in the original, appropriately labeled container. The USD 383 medication consent form (available at the school office, the USD 383 website, and at most doctor’s offices) must be completed. The School Medication policy complies with the State of Kansas Regulations. Medication consent form must be completed and signed by both a physician (dentist, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant) and the parent before any prescribed medication can be given at school. Medication consent form must be completed and signed by parent before any over-the-counter medication can be given at school. Medication consent forms must be renewed each school year. Antibiotics given three times a day do not usually need to be given during school hours. They can be spaced out adequately by giving before school, after school, and at bedtime. Metered dose inhalers and EpiPens may be carried by the student or kept in their physical education locker if the signed consent form (see #1 above) is on file in the nurse’s office and the student has demonstrated the ability to use the inhaler and/or EpiPen correctly. IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS 2 doses of the Meningococcal Vaccine are required. Doses should be given at entry to 7th grade (11-12 years) and 11th grade (16-18 years). A single dose of Tdap is required for grades 7-12 regardless of interval since the last tetanus. Two doses of Varicella (chickenpox) are required for grades K-12. These requirements are set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Please make sure the school nurse has an up to date copy of your student’s Immunization records. PLEASE KEEP TELEPHONE NUMBERS UPDATED Please remember to update the school office whenever there are any changes in your telephone numbers-home, work, and emergency numbers. It is very important for the school nurse to be able to reach a parent or other designated adult at all times. |

The Purple 8 Team would like to welcome students and parents to this school year. We expect this year to be an exciting one filled with growth and learning. The Purple 8 Core Team consists of: Dr. Casey Ewy (Social Studies), Angelique Martinez (Science), Steffani Kohls (Language Arts), and Sydney Pilger (Math 8 and Advanced Math). We like to acknowledge our students’ hard work and effort by sending out positive notes weekly. We try to include interdisciplinary projects quarterly, and in our 8th hours we cover topics such as team building, social-emotional topics, grades and support, study hall, and other student initiated topics. Once a week, our team sends out a team letter that includes dates or topics coming up and dinner conversations that are meant to promote conversations with your “talkative” 8th grader. All of our weekly lesson plans are found on Canvas. Our team meets semi-weekly to discuss student issues and curriculum; additionally, this time is used to visit with parents when needed. Please contact us if you want to meet with us during this time. |

Our family enjoys activities such as Pokémon Go, collecting sports cards, reading books, visiting museums, and spending time with family and friends. I earned my undergraduate teaching degree from Kansas State University and completed my master’s degree in administration at Emporia State. This year marks my 13th year of teaching, during which I have taught students from 4th to 8th grade. Exploring STEM is an elective class that is available to all 7th and 8th-grade students at Anthony Middle School. This class is all about students exploring technology in a “hands-on” manner. This is accomplished through 17 modules from which students are given the opportunity to rank the two they would most like to experience. A module is simply a workstation set up with everything that one or two students need to explore an area of technology. Exploring STEM is truly a “learn-by-doing” class! Some of the modules offered are Computer Graphics and Animation, Weather, Rocketry and Space, Electricity and Electronics, Practical Skills, Research & Design, and many more. The class is one quarter (9-weeks) long and students can sign up for the class for as many as six quarters during their time at middle school |
During the year you will be able to take part in a variety of team games/sports, fitness activities, and outdoor sports. We are excited to have you in class this year. - Mr. Snyder teaches 6th grade PE and is the 7th/8th grade Girls Basketball coach, as well as a baseball coach at MHS.
- Ms. Moylan teaches 7th/8th PE and Fitness and Leadership. She also coaches 7th grade A volleyball and is the Head Assistant Basketball Coach at MHS.
- Mr. Ingram teaches 7th/8th PE and Fitness and Leadership. He’s the Varsity tennis coach and boys’ Head assistant basketball coach at MHS.
- Ms. Blomquist teaches 7th/8th grade PE and 6th grade PE.
- Mr. Gray teaches 6th grade PE and 7th/8th grade Health.
All these teachers have experience working with middle school students and are excited to get students moving while introducing them to lifelong activities that encourage movement, wellness, and healthy habits.
All students will be expected to wear the required P.E. T-shirt which can be purchased at the AMS office for $5 each, shorts or sweats, tied shoes and socks. Please put student’s name on or in everything so that lost clothing may be returned to the student. Students should be prepared to go outside in cool weather by having a sweatshirt or jacket in their P.E. locker. In addition, if students have an older pair of tennis shoes that they can bring and leave in their locker for when we go outside when the grass is damp. All physical education uniforms are to be taken home to be washed every Friday and brought back clean on Monday.
Students must bring a note to their teacher if, for any reason, they cannot participate in Physical Education. If the student cannot participate for more than three days, a doctor’s note is required. Sportsmanship is a high priority in our classroom. It is included in the student’s academic grade. We have students at many different levels of skill and knowledge of activities. We expect all students to be inclusive with other students and show respect for each other. Grades are based upon following directions, suiting out, participating with maximum effort, positive attitude and improvement with fitness testing. School and classroom rules
Fitness and Leadership is taught by Ms. Moylan and Mr. Ingram. This class is available to 7th and 8th grade only. It is very important that we have all special education records in order to make the best placement decisions for your student. If you do not have access to these records, please let one of the office professionals know and we will assist you in getting those records as quickly as possible. It is our goal that all students have a strong start to their school year. With proper planning and information, we can help this happen. We have a tremendously talented and inclusive special education staff that is here to help your student have the best middle school experience possible. My name is Shelly Ingram and this is my 10th year at Anthony Middle School, and my 22nd year as a School Counselor. I have spent most of that time in the middle school. My husband, Tony, teaches PE/Fitness & Leadership at AMS and coaches at MHS. We have two daughters. Our oldest is in her first year at Ft. Hays State University and our youngest attends MHS. I truly enjoy working with middle school students, as they are transitioning from childhood to adulthood, and figuring out who they are. Adolescence is such a transformative time, and it is a joy to watch students grow and change in the short time they are with us. AMS is such a supportive environment, and we work to help all students figure out who they are and what tools they need to be successful in school- and in life!

My name is Kristin Emmitt and my first year at Anthony Middle School was for the 2020-21 school year. I have been a school counselor since 2014 & have spent that time as a middle & elementary school counselor. You may also find me teaching dance, coaching cheer and Track & Field throughout the year. I am a School Counselor because I believed that being in schools was the most accessible way of reaching the general population who may struggle with mental health needs and to teach social emotional skills. Being able to help students develop academic and career ready skills are intervention areas that school counselors may also do with individuals or groups of students. With all the struggles that may come along with Middle School, I value being at this level because the students can learn to be proactive and preventative in nature, rather than reactive. I’m so happy to be at AMS with an incredible staff who are all working towards the same goal to support our Middle Schoolers.
